Growth Beyond the Classroom
Showing Up Where It Matters Most: The Impact of School-Based Mental Health Services
Every day, Pathway’s school-based therapists and case managers show up in Stark County schools—not just as providers, but as trusted supports woven into the fabric of students’ daily lives. They attend school meetings, align with academic schedules, and meet students in real time, offering care exactly where and when it’s needed most.
This consistent presence does more than provide convenience—it builds relationships. And those relationships can change lives.
Recently, one of our therapists experienced a powerful reminder of just how lasting that impact can be.
A Moment That Says It All
In the days leading up to this past January’s “Snowmageddon,” Becky, a Pathway school-based therapist, stood in line at a grocery store when she heard a familiar voice. A young man approached her—someone she hadn’t seen in years but instantly recognized.
He had been Becky’s client for three years during middle school. Now a high school senior, he introduced her to his girlfriend and proudly shared, “This is my counselor.”
He went on to explain how their time together helped him learn to talk about his feelings and manage his anger. Today, he’s completing a vocational program and plans to work with his father after graduation. He also shared that he’s doing better in school and continues to benefit from Pathway’s case management services.
For Becky, the moment was deeply meaningful.
Because she remembered where he started.
Growth You Can See
When he first began counseling, this young man struggled with frequent angry outbursts and classroom disruptions. He avoided talking about his emotions, often clashed with adults, and disliked school altogether.
But the young man standing in front of her that day was different—respectful, confident, kind, and self-aware. He could clearly see his own growth.
“I told him I was so proud of him,” Becky shared. “These are the stories that keep me showing up every day.”
Why This Work Matters
Stories like this highlight the long-term impact of school-based mental health services. When students receive consistent, on-site support during critical developmental years, they gain more than short-term solutions.
They develop lifelong skills:
- Emotional regulation
- Healthy communication
- Resilience in the face of challenges
These are the tools that help students succeed—not just in school, but at home and in their communities.
Pathway’s work goes beyond addressing immediate behavioral concerns. It’s about building relationships, fostering growth, and walking alongside students during some of the most formative years of their lives.
Investing in the Future
Continued investment in school-based mental health services ensures that more young people have the opportunity to thrive—academically, socially, and personally.
Because success stories like this don’t happen by chance. They happen because someone showed up, stayed consistent, and believed in a student’s potential.
And that’s exactly what Pathway continues to do—every single day.
In partnership with StarkMHAR, Pathway currently provides school-based mental health services in:
Malvern School District, East Canton School District, Fairless School District, Faircrest Elementary School, Beacon Academy, St. Thomas Aquinas High School, and Heritage Christian School.
